The name Singapore is derived from the malay word “Singapura”. The English name Singapura comes from the Malay word Palembang Singapura meaning "Lion City," which is derived from Sanskrit. Thus Singapura is a combination of Singa that means “lion” and “pura” that stands for “town”. It is the only country and an island in Southeast Asia. It is snuggled off the southernmost tip of the Malay Peninsula to the north of the equator. The territory comprises lozenge-shaped Main Island, heralded as Singapore Island and Pulau Ujong in Malay. The Straits of Johor (north) separates Singapore from Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore Strait (south) keeps it separated from Indonesia's Riau Islands. Owing to land reclamation, the territory of Singapore has been expanded.
